Workspace achieves energy savings of 30% for ACMV, 40% for lighting and 10% for plug load with intelligent co-pilot AI technologies

Situation

The Smart Lab team’s objectives was to reduce energy consumption with a long term goal of achieving Net Zero. For the past few years, other vendors had already been working to reduce lab energy use.

Yet the lab keeps experiencing anomalies like lights switching on during the night with no activity, inconsistent ACMV controls and sensing false positives which contribute to energy waste.

ENX Systems task was to assess the entire lab’s technology relevant to energy use, and then to improve upon what had been done, with a target of reducing energy use by 30% while maintaining occupant well being.

Solution

First a baseline of “as-is” energy consumption is established to enable clear validation of energy savings.

A network of occupancy, air quality, and ambient temperature sensors was deployed across microzones—compact spaces like meeting rooms and workstations (16–25 sqm)—each with its own lighting and ACMV. These sensors fed real-time data into ENX Sustainability Suite, allowing dynamic control of lighting, ventilation, and air conditioning based on actual human activity. This created a more uniform climate and eliminated hot and cold spots while reducing energy use.

Air quality sensors tracking PM2.5, PM10, CO₂, VOCs, and formaldehyde provided continuous health insights. These parameters constrained ACMV control to ensure fresh air levels remained within safe limits while optimizing energy.

To address appliance-related energy consumption, smart plugs were integrated and controlled using the same presence detection logic. This allowed for automated plug load management without user involvement.

An integrated energy savings tracker dashboard quantifies and displays energy savings for lighting, ACMV, Plug Loads and Chilled Water savings, tracking each initiative in real time. This dashboard also provides annualized energy savings projections which are useful when optimization is first activated.

Ultimately, the space became an intelligent, responsive environment—enhancing occupant comfort, maintaining indoor air quality, and significantly reducing energy consumption.

Outcome

With ENX Sustainability Suite, the office is projected to achieve annual energy savings of 8,072 kWh, carbon emissions reduction of 3,364 kgCO2e and dollar savings of $4,200. Energy Savings for Lighting, ACMV and Plug Loads where intelligent controls was deployed amounts to 30.4% annually.

Due to better thermal regulation, chilled water savings achieved was 28,708kWh and the temperature delta in the office improved from 3~4oC to 1~2oC.

This project achieved a net electrical energy savings of 13.9% and 39.1% for Chilled Water Savings over a 6 month period. Total cost savings to date amounted to $2,202 with a reduction in CO2 emissions by 13,727 kgCO2e.
